I recently read a quote that said, “Strong candidates are not joining your legacy. They’re joining your trajectory.

My first thought was: That’s a sad thought.

It isn’t true but imagine how empty our work at AGRI-SEARCH, in the agriculture industry, would be if it were.

Agriculture and legacy are synonymous. Very little happens in this industry without someone thinking about what came before them and what they hope to leave behind. Farms are passed from one generation to the next. Businesses are built over decades and generations, not quarters. Like family farms, family businesses in agriculture are forged from the time, financial and dedication investments made by entrepreneurs who dream of passing a legacy on to the next generation.

Legacy isn’t just part of agriculture. Legacy is agriculture.

I don’t disagree that trajectory is important. Of course it is, a business on a downward trajectory won’t be a business for very long. Every candidate wants to know where a company is headed, but growth isn’t always the driving factor qualified candidates are looking for. The candidates we place want to know that a company is led by a team with a vision, and what kind of opportunity the role they are considering will have to make a difference in that vision. Those questions…and their answers…matter because no one wants to be a part of something that doesn’t have a future.

The companies we work with understand that a strong future isn’t built by abandoning your past. It’s built by honoring and finding team members who will do the same.

Over the past 25 years, AGRI-SEARCH has had the privilege of talking with thousands of agricultural professionals. Some have spent their entire careers with one company; some were focused on growing their careers through the different experiences found with new roles within different companies. Regardless of where they were or what they were looking for, they weren’t looking for just another job.

We all want to do work that means something; we all want to work for leaders who keep their word, we want to work alongside people we respect and who reciprocate that respect, and we want to know that the business we are supporting with our labor has values that match our own.

When a business has spent decades treating employees well, serving customers honestly and investing in its people, it earns something that can’t be manufactured in a recruiting campaign: trust and respect.

The companies we work with know that there is no substitute for reputation that has been built over generations.

We have watched time and again candidates accept offers that weren’t the highest-paying because they believed in the people leading the company, the lifestyle and legacy. We have watched professionals relocate their families because they wanted to become part of an organization known for integrity, they weren’t choosing between legacy and trajectory. They were choosing both, and both mattered.

Today, the companies attracting the very best people are the ones that can confidently say, “Here’s who we are, here’s who we have been, and here’s where we are going. Help us get there!”

At AGRI-SEARCH, we know that recruiting isn’t about filling a position. It’s about connecting people with organizations whose values match their own and whose future they genuinely want to help build.

Strong candidates aren’t choosing between legacy and trajectory.

They are looking for employers whose trajectory is built on a legacy worth continuing.

And I hope that never changes.
