Description

We have partnered with a leading agricultural grain processing organization in Colorado to identify an experienced and motivated Assistant Controller who will support and eventually succeed their current Controller. This role will allow you to get your foot in the door for a great opportunity. You learn the business from the ground up, starting with grain accounting and progressing into full financial accounting responsibilities, including future oversight of payroll, benefits administration, and other key functions.

The Assistant Controller will begin by immersing themselves in the company’s grain accounting processes, learning how the ERP system flows, understanding how transactions are processed, and developing a command of inventory, settlements, and weekly accounting routines. A strong foundation in accounting is essential, as success in this role depends on being able to troubleshoot issues, interpret financial impacts, and connect operational activity to accounting outcomes.

As the role expands, the Assistant Controller will assist with the monthly and annual close, financial reporting, reconciliations, audits, and process improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate brings solid financial accounting experience, strong Excel skills, and the drive to step into a future leadership role.

Key Responsibilities
• Learn and perform grain accounting processes, including contracts, settlements, inventory, and ERP workflows
• Assist with general ledger accounting, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
• Support the monthly and annual close processes
• Participate in audit preparation and coordination
• Communicate daily with remote accounting team members and cross-functional staff
• Help identify and implement process improvements
• Grow into broader responsibilities, including payroll and benefits administration

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred but not required.
• 5+ years of financial accounting experience with strong financial accounting skills.
• Strong Excel proficiency and ability to work within a complex ERP environment (experience beyond QuickBooks required).
• Problem-solving mindset, determination, and initiative; must be a true self-starter with a can-do attitude who can work independently and loves to learn.
• Ability to thrive in a multi-location, smaller company culture and collaborate with all team members, including both accounting and non-accounting teams (grain merchandising).

This opportunity is ideal for someone who wants a clear path to advancement and the chance to work closely with a highly respected Controller who is committed to hands-on training and long-term knowledge transfer. If you’re looking to grow into a leadership role and make a meaningful impact, this position offers a strong career trajectory.

Compensation includes a competitive salary with room to grow as responsibilities expand, along with an excellent benefits package.
